Digital Performer 6 Announced
Mike Levine January 17th, 2008
MOTU announced the upcoming release of Digital Performer 6, which promises to be a major upgrade to the company¡¯s flagship digital audio sequencer. DP 6 features a redesigned user interface, which includes the ability to zoom in the Track window. Two new signal processing plug-ins are included: Pro Verb, a convolution reverb that MOTU says is very CPU efficient, and Masterworks Leveler, a dynamics processor that models the classic LA-2A. A new, and very flexible track comping feature is also included. It gives you plenty of control for comping takes, and it even lets you comp your comps. DP 6 will also include support for Broadcast WAV files, which means your sequence¡¯s audio files no longer need to be in Sound Designer II format. Also included is support for Final Cut Pro XML files, allowing you easily edit your video¡¯s audio track in DP. Another key addition is the ability to burn CDs directly from DP. DP 6 is scheduled for release sometime during the first quarter of this year., and its price will remain unchanged.
++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Hey everyone... I just got off the phone with my good friend Jim Watson who decided to swing by the NAMM show quickly. We talked the entire time during his drive back to L.A. He was at the show and saw the MOTU demo. I was NOT at the show, so I'm going to try to related as best I can what he just finishing telling me about 5 minutes ago.
Big Item #1-- MOTU unveiled Digital Performer 6!!
Here are some of the highlights. Again, this is not exact as I wrote them down hurriedly as Jim described it.
1) MAJOR OVERHAUL OF UI. Apparently the UI has been overhauled significantly. A cleaner look and actually Jim said it's "lighter" in appearance... not as dark as before.
2) TRACKS OVERVIEW VERTICALLY SCALEABLE. At last for those of us tired of squinting at 9 pt Geneva, the Tracks Overview is scaleable.
3) COLORED WAVEFORMS. My prayer answered. The colored bar at the top of the soundbites that seemed like a kludge are gone. I'm assuming waveforms can also be full height of soundbite now.
4) NEW INCLUDED PLUG-IN: MW LEVELER. This apparently, according to MOTU is an outright emulation of an LA-2A and will be included with DP.
5) NEW INCLUDED PLUG-IN: CONVOLUTION REVERB. I think Jim said this was called "ProVerb" and is a convolution reverb. Apparently it comes with a lot of IRs and can import them as well. Monkey man... I know this was something you've wanted.
6) EXPLODED TAKES VIEW. I don't know exactly how this works, but apparently DP now can explode the takes in a track and easily create comp tracks from multiple takes. Very cool.
7) HD VIDEO FRAME RATE SUPPORT. New version supports the HD video frame rate now.
VIs CAPTURED DURING BOUNCE TO DISK. There's no need to print VI's to audio tracks before bouncing to disk. Very cool!!!
9) PRE-RENDERING FOR VIs. Not sure how this works, but VIs have pre-rendering making DP much more efficient when working with multiple VIs. I don't know what effect this has on making lower buffer settings when tracking VIs practical, but I have high hopes.
10) ABILITY TO BOUNCE DIRECTLY TO CD. There is an option to bounce and burn directly to CD from DP without the need for Toast or 3rd party app.
12) EUPHONIX CONTROL SURFACE SUPPORT. MOTU had the new Euphonix control surfaces on display with DP at their booth. Currently they work in some sort of Mackie emulation, but MOTU stated that drivers for direct support of Euphonix comm protocol are being developed.
13) TIGHTER INTEGRATION WITH FINAL CUT. Not sure of this one... Jim didn't hear it to well, but there's some sort of tighter ability for moving files between FCP and DP. Something about DP being able to read an XML file or something. My apologies... this should all start becoming clear when MOTU publishes this on their site and more and better information becomes available.
I would point out that, once again, when many begin to count MOTU out, they seem to pull something amazing out. I've seen this over and over through the years. They very well may have done it again. |
